The two rows of 20 characters have no space row between them, so that using the 8 programmable characters you can create characters that span both rows. The MX300 displayed a mix of single and double height digits, but I have no information on whether the controller supports this or whether they just used programmable characters. During testing I tried setting double height fonts but to no useful effect. I implemented a simple double height numeric character set using the programmable characters and one existing character. You could design a full set of double height alpha-numeric characters and reprogram the 8 programmable characters on the fly to display any four of them at once. You could extend the idea to 2 double height, double width characters.
